Mafia fans are eagerly waiting for the next Mafia 4 game. In August 2022, Hangar 13’s general manager Roman Hladik confirmed that Mafia 4 is on track for development. So, the upcoming Mafia 4 game isn’t a rumor, because Hangar 13 is the game studio behind Mafia franchises. However, we don’t have the official release confirmation from the game publisher 2K.
It has been two years since Roman Hladik talked about Mafia 4. We can assume that Mafia 4 is very close to being ready for prime time, as games like Mafia usually take 2-3 years to develop. In the meantime, we also have some Mafia 4 information about the storyline and development updates. So far, we’ve confirmed that Mafia 4 is the game at Hanger 13 studio running under the code name Nero.

The Mafia 4 storyline illustrates Salieri’s early days.
The upcoming Mafia 4 will be a prequel to the original Mafia: City of Lost Heaven game launched in 2002, and it was a masterpiece of that time. The original Mafia game was developed by Illusion Softworks, later acquired by Take-Two Interactive. The second Mafia 2 game was another classic developed by 2K Czech, which took almost eight years after the first game appeared.
Later, Hangar 13 studio continued the Mafia franchise while 2K remains as publisher. Sadly, Hangar 13’s first attempt at Mafia 3 wasn’t that great. Most game reviewers criticized Mafia 3 due to its flawed gameplay. A lot of Mafia fans were also disappointed with the gameplay.
However, Hanger 13 took this criticism seriously, and their next game Mafia: Definitive Edition(2020) is very polished even though it was a remake. The gameplay was marvelous and a perfect rebirth of the original classic Mafia: City of Lost Haven. Mafia fans got excited again because Hanger 13 didn’t disappoint this time.
Mafia 4 is supposed to be a prequel to the Mafia: City of Lost Heaven. We will see the young Don Saliari’s and his friend Morello’s story there. The game location is plotted somewhere between Sicily and USA, over the years 1890-1920. We have seen Saliari’s gangster life in the first mafia game, where he was the main villain along with Morello.
In the first Mafia game, the main character Tomy, and his friends killed Morello for Saliari. Though Salieri and Marello were friends once, they became enemies of each other to take control of power after killing their boss Don Peppone. Salirai survived and successfully avoided the death penalty on trial, even though Tomy provided all evidence against him. Later, he took revenge and killed the game hero Tomy.
Salieri was the smartest gangster in the Mafia franchise and had a strong personality in the first game. Now, how Hanger 13 illustrates his early gangster days in Mafia 4 remains to be seen.
Mafia 4 will unleash the Unreal Engine 5 power.
Unreal Engine 5 games are visually appealing for their high-detail modeling and real-time ray tracing effects. Hardcore Mafia fans were excited when Hanger 13 listed several job posts where the company was looking for Unreal Engine 5 developers, which indicates that Mafia 4 will be an Unreal Engine 5 game. However, the studio has other AAA titles in development, but there is a strong possibility that the game will set new visual standards using UE5.
Some leaks suggest that the game will have stealth mode and multiplayer support. However, the Mafia franchises had some stealth missions from the beginning. Mission “Visiting Rich People” in the old game was a stealth mission where Tomy and Salvatori steal documents from the councilor’s house. So, there will be no surprise if we see some stealth missions in upcoming Mafia 4 games. But, the multiplayer support is a complete rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt. None of the Mafa games had multiplayer support in the past. However, if this rumor is true, this will be a big surprise for Mafia fans.
Mafia 4 release date.
Until we get official confirmation, we can’t reveal when exactly the game will arrive. Moreover, we still haven’t seen any Mafia 4 trailer, even though the game has been in production for over two years. We are expecting Mafia 4 will hit the market in 2025. There is a catch, 2K Games recently unveiled a GTA 6 trailer, which is developed by Rockstar Games and also scheduled to be released in 2025.
The GTA 6 is expected to be another blockbuster AAA title for 2K games along with Mafia 4. So, it is safe to assume that, 2K won’t release the Mafia 4 and GTA 6 at the same time due to business policies. As we already get the GTA 6 trailer, 2K may release the GTA 6 first and Mafia 4 in the second quarter of 2025.
Mafia 4 System Requirments.
Mafia 4 will be available in console and PC versions. We will see the next generation console update in 2025, Sony and Microsoft both are preparing for their upcoming console, and there is a rumor that Microsft will use an Intel graphic chip for their next XBox. Sony may continue their PS6 journey with AMD.
Mafia 4 PC hardware requirements will be very demanding as games developed on Unreal Engine have more extensive graphics capabilities and ray tracing support. So, I won’t surprised if Mafia 4 demands an RTX 2060 and a quad-core processor as minimum requirements.
By the time we get Mafia 4 on our hands, Nvidia RTX 5000, and AMD RDNA 4 GPU will hit the market with big generation performance uplift. Intel is also preparing its Battlemage graphics card, which could fuel the Xbox engine. Again, until the developer reveals their hardware requirement for Mafia 4, there is no way to say how demanding the title will be.
