Since the beginning of 2024, we have seen high-end 4K 240Hz OLED monitors begin to replace IPS and VA gaming monitors and this trend continues in other segments as LG recently released 27GX790A-B, a QHD OLED monitor with a 480Hz refresh rate. However, LG’s first 4K 32-inch 240Hz monitor did have a 480Hz mode but was limited to 1080P resolution. This time LG strikes with a QHD OLED monitor, which sports a 480Hz refresh rate. LG started taking pre-orders for UltraGear 27GX790A-B, expected to be available in retail stores soon.
However, this is not the first QHD 480HZ OLED monitor to arrive on the market. Asus released their ROG Swift PG27AQDP, which uses the same LG WOLED panel. This time, LG is bringing this W-OLED monitor under its Ultragear branding, aimed at competitive gamers. For being an OLED monitor, 27GX790A-B has an impressive 0.03ms response timing, which eliminates ghosting seen on the other high refresh rate TN monitors.

LG advertises this monitor as a DP 2.1 monitor but there is no confirmation whether it supports UHBR 20 or UHBR 13.5 with DSC. No consumer GPU supports UHBR 2.0 specs except AMD’s workstation cards. The next-gen Nvidia and Intel GPUS are supposed to have DP 2.1 ports, Intel confirms their Battlemage GPUs will feature UHBR 13.5 with DSC similar to current AMD’s RX 7000 series but no information revealed about Nvidia’s upcoming GPU’s UHBR specifications. However, DP 2.1 with UHBR 13.5 provides much higher bandwidth than the DP 1.4 port on the Asus PG27AQDP. LG Ultragear 27GX790A-B has a better advantage featuring DP 2.1 ports and standard HDMI 2.1 connectivity.
The factory-calibrated Ultragear 27GX790A-B claims 98.5% DCI-P3 color gamut support. However, color accuracy isn’t as important for fps gamers. But, it is expected to have top-notch color accuracy as this monitor costs almost a thousand dollars.
LG’s WOLED panels usually have much higher brightness than Samsung’s QD-OLED and 27GX790A-B is no exception, rocking a 1300 nits peak HDR brightness. HDR experience on an OLED monitor is something different than any backlit monitor as OLED has individual light sources for each pixel. You can enjoy a true deep black and immersive gaming experience with an ultra-fast 480Hz monitor. LG claims about a 15M:1 contrast ratio, which is often called an infinite contrast ratio.
There is a black stabilizer mode and other gaming features such as Freesync Premium Pro, G-Sync, Crosshair, and Dynamic Action Sync are available to enhance the gaming experience even further. This monitor is aimed at competitive gamers. However, to push the frame rate over 400 fps, you’ll need a powerful gaming CPU like AMD Ryzen 9800X3D paired with an RTX 4090 class graphics card.
